Current Students

Advising

Graduate Students

Each graduate student is assigned a faculty advisor. Students should initiate contact with their advisors for assistance with planning their programs of study, course selection and registration, and other assistance related to career planning and post-M.S.W. employment. Faculty advisors also provide guidance for problem solving regarding academic difficulties. Students who are uncertain of the name of their advisor should contact Jean Pellegrino at 443-5562 or jmpelleg@syr.edu.

 

Undergraduate Students

First-year students receive advising assistance from staff in the college’s Office of Student Services. After the first semester of the second year, students are assigned a social work faculty advisor. Students who are uncertain of the name of their faculty advisor should contact Keith Alford at 443-4252 or kalford@syr.edu.

 

Minor in Social Welfare

Students with questions about the minor in social welfare should contact Keith Alford at 443-4252 or kalford@syr.edu.

 

Student Handbooks

The Graduate Student Handbook and Undergraduate Student Handbook outline the degree programs, expectations for students, procedures for students in difficulty, and other resources. Students are expected to read the handbook at the start of the program.

Financial aid

Graduate Students

Each spring, the School of Social Work is allocated need-based tuition scholarships for graduate students who will be enrolled for the following academic year. This aid is available to both incoming and continuing graduate students. A small number of named scholarships also are available. The School of Social Work Graduate Request for Financial Aid form and information about the process are available by calling 443-5550. More information is also available online. M.S.W. program graduates who stay in New York State may be eligible for the New York State loan forgiveness program after one year of post-M.S.W. licensed employment. More information is available online. In addition, the NASW lists other loan forgiveness programs.

 

Undergraduate Students

Job Opportunities

The Office of College Relations, located at 119 Euclid Ave., offers job listings in social work and other fields, including job opportunities on campus and in the local community. Social Workers United

Social Workers United (SWU), which is open to both undergraduate and graduate students, encourages student involvement with local and social service agencies and the community through service, educational events, and social functions. SWU promotes the interaction of social work students with social work faculty and others across campus, and also serves as an advocacy group representing the concerns of social work students. Each year, the group sponsors the Social Justice Forum, a special event where the Dan and Mary Lou Rubenstein Social Justice Award is presented. SWU also sponsors other activities throughout the year, including an end-of-year celebration, special speakers, or other events of interest to social work students.
