About the Department

In the Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS) we prepare our students for exciting careers in a variety of settings, including early childhood and intervention programs, social service agencies, schools and preschools, community organizations, and parenting programs. A hallmark of the CFS program is our “research to practice” component in which all students gain hands-on experience by working directly with children and families through internships in local agencies and/or businesses. Students may also gain early childhood teacher training by participating in research at the Bernice M. Wright Child Development Laboratory School, which enrolls pre-school aged children from the local community and is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The department offers a bachelor (B.S.), a master (M.A., M.S.) and a doctoral degree in Child and Family Studies. Through the programs, students gain a broad knowledge of human development across the lifespan and have the option of concentrating on Family Studies or Child Development. The department also offers an undergraduate minor and the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) credential.

The Syracuse University Department of Child and Family Studies values diversity and has developed curricula emphases in the following areas:

  • Cross Cultural Child and Family Development
  • Fatherhood
  • Gerontology
  • At Risk Families
In addition to our programs of study, we encourage our students to study abroad. For example, many of our students have studied child development in Italy and women and family issues in Costa Rica. For more information, please refer to SU Abroad website.
