An article written by Susan Chuang, “Taiwanese-Canadian Mothers' Beliefs about Personal Freedom for their Young Children,” will be in press this July in Social Development.
Ambika Krishnakumar and Kim Jaffee received tenure, effective August 21.
Sara Kurlandsky presented a poster on “Protective Effects of Vitamin C on Adipocyte Health and Modulation of Triacylglycerol Accumulation” (she translates: “protective effects of vitamin C on fat cell health and keeping down the amount of fat that gets stored) at the national meeting: Experimental Biology 2006 (part of American Society for Nutrition). The presentation represented the work of nutrition graduate student Sandeep Chadha under Sara’s direction.
Sandy Lane was honored with a 2006 Academy of Diversity Achievers Award at the YWCA’s Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism and Promote Diversity luncheon

Alejandro Garcia was the lead presenter at an AARP press conference on a survey of Hispanic New Yorkers and prescription drug affordability.
Tanya Horacek will present “Young adults’ preferences for Stages of Change-based nutrition educational materials” and “Low Fat Eating Behaviors are Associated with a Variety of Health Behaviors” at the Society for Nutrition Education’s annual meeting in July.
Eric Kingson delivered the Mildred M. Seltzer Opening Keynote Address at the Ohio Association of Gerontology and Education’s 30th Annual Ohio Professional & Student Conference on Aging. His talk was titled, “Justice Across Generations: Respect, Responsibility and Reciprocity.”
Sandy Lane presented “Wellness Education and the Black Community: Lessons from Syracuse” as part of the Department of African American Studies’ Eduardo Mondlane Brown Bag Series.
Nancy Mudrick gave testimony before the New York State Assembly at the Public Hearing on the Oversight and Accountability of the Child Welfare System. The hearing focused on the challenges and issues facing New York State’s child protection system.
Michael Veley is the recipient of the Sports Industry Professionals Founders Award from Ithaca College.
Vennie Cowart received the William A. Mack Memorial Drum Major Award for Beloved Community from the Syracuse Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance.

Felicia Proud, together with Bruce Carter and intern student Jason Castro, received a Chancellor’s Feinstone Grant for Multicultural Initiatives, which they will use to design a program to help students, faculty, and staff learn more about the Haudenoshaunee culture in order to create a more welcoming environment for Haudenoshaunee Promise students.

Luvenia Cowart received a grant from the Gifford Foundation for “The Genesis Health Project: Healthy Lifestyles Mentoring for Urban Delights Youth.” An article by Mona Mittal (with Elizabeth Wieling), “Training Experiences of International Doctoral Students in Marriage and Family Therapy,” was accepted for publication by the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy.
Jonathan Sandberg, Paula Trief et al (SUNY Upstate Medical University), received funding from the National Institutes of Health for “Improving diabetes outcomes: A couples intervention.”
An article by Lynn Brann, “More Controlling Child Feeding Practices Found Among Parents of Boys with an Average BMI Compared to Parents of Boys with a High BMI,” was published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.
