Rachel Terwilliger
For Rachel Terwilliger, Healthy You @ SU is the perfect way to combine her talent for nutrition with her interest in communications. Rachel has been writing for Healthy You—a student health newsmagazine published by the College of Human Ecology—since her freshman year. “My whole life, I’ve been trying to inspire people about nutrition,” she says. “Now I am using Healthy You to do that.”
Rachel knew early on that she wanted to earn a degree in nutrition, having been interested in the field since she was a child. She chose to attend Syracuse University after a visit to campus during her senior year in high school. “I just felt comfortable here,” she says. “Everyone was so welcoming.”
She has continued to thrive in her nutrition classes, where she has grown close to her classmates and eagerly absorbed her studies. “I love learning about all the different aspects of nutrition,” she says. “The best thing about it is, you can relate it to your own life.”
Outside of the classroom, Rachel has always made an effort to stay involved. Joining the editorial board of Healthy You provided her with a way to do that, and also allowed her to get to know students and faculty members from other programs, and work with the campus dietitian.
Perhaps most importantly, her involvement with the magazine has helped her explore what she wants to do with her future, as she has nurtured a budding interest in nutrition communications. “So often, if you’re working in the field of nutrition, you’re dealing with communications—trying to motivate people to make healthy changes,” she says. After graduation, Rachel plans to attend graduate school to earn a master’s degree in nutrition communications.
Healthy You @ SU is written and produced for students, by students. The biannual publication presents healthy lifestyle information in a student-friendly format with the goal of promoting a healthier campus community. Student writers, editors, and designers are invited to become part of the editorial board. For more information, contact Luvenia Cowart at 315-443-9808 or lwcowart@syr.edu.
