Student Services
The Office of Student Support Services assists all students, faculty, and staff in making academic, personal, and community connections. The staff strives to create a highly welcoming and educationally sound system of college and University services.
The primary goals of Student Support Services are represented by the Student Transition and Retention Program (STAR). Through STAR, the student support services staff:
- Assists students in their transition to academic, University, and community life
- Encourages all individuals in the college to be welcoming, supportive, and responsible to self and others in the spirit of diversity and team work
- Provides comprehensive services-both within the college and through partnerships with other University offices
Academic Counseling The student support services staff also provides learning and personal assessment for all students through academic counseling, and may also provide referrals to University or local support systems. Specifically, students can receive one-on-one assistance with test taking, time management, individual student prescriptions based on test analysis, and counseling as it relates to academic and personal adjustment to college. Students and faculty members who are interested in these services should contact Felicia Proud at 315-443-9814 or fmproud@syr.edu.

Academic Progress Student Support Services is also closely linked with issues of academic progress. Students who have achieved academic honors will be placed on the Dean's List and recognized each semester. Those who have been placed on College Probation, University Probation, or One Term Trial may access a number of college and University resources to assist them in improving their academic performance. Staff in the college's Office of Student Services will determine a course of action for students who are experiencing academic difficulty. In the event of suspension, each student's appeal letter, academic record, and personal circumstances will be reviewed by the college's Academic Progress Committee, which comprises staff from the Office of Student Services, department chairs, academic advisors and, if necessary, representatives from other campus offices (i.e. Athletics, Student Supportive Services).
Probationary plans provide a consistent and fair method of academic sanction for all students, thereby supporting the academic rigor of college and University programs and providing direction and a system of intervention for students at risk.
Students will receive letters notifying them of academic sanction and providing information on ways to restore good academic status and make connections for personalized assistance.
Syracuse University Academic Rules and Regulations, this Web site, and the college's Handbook for Students, Faculty, and Staff specifically describe standards of academic progress.
