NSD Students Offer Nutrition Education at Samaritan Center

Dietetic Internship Match Rate

During the Fall 2009 semester, members of Orange Wrap conducted food demonstrations as part of the Samaritan Center's Monday Mile Program and the SU campus’ Healthy Monday initiative. Participants of the program completed one mile of walking at the downtown YMCA and then returned to the Center for nutrition education and healthy meal food preparation demonstrations, which included roasted vegetable pasta and summer berry oatmeal pancakes this past semester. Recipes developed/used are tailored towards those who have diabetes and/or hypertension. The two nutrition educators pictured here are SU senior Haley Robertson and sophomore Jenny Cholewka. Students received great feedback from the programs, with participants enjoying the prepared meals and benefiting from a fun and educational program. Orange Wrap was created in the fall of 2005 as part of the Healthy Campus Initiative as a way to provide nutrition education to students across campus. Orange Wrap educators are junior, senior and graduate nutrition majors at SU who are selected, trained and supervised by a registered dietitian.

SU Nutrition Students Excel Academically

Dietetic Internship Match Rate

For years, SU Nutrition students have exceeded the national match success rate

The national match rate for students seeking a required internship to be eligible to take the exam to become a registered dietician is 55 percent. For Syracuse University students in the Department of Nutrition Science and Dietetics, their match rate far exceeds the national average at 88 percent. Additionally, SU’s accredited internship program graduated 10 interns in April, 2009. All 10 found full-time employment within three weeks of program completion. SU’s Dietetic Internship Class of 2008-2009 had a 100 percent pass rate for the registered dietitian exam.
