Social work junior named Miss Finger Lakes 2009
Lorna Rose’s community involvement focused on fighting domestic violence
Lorna Rose, a junior majoring in social work, was named Miss Finger Lakes 2009. With a 4.0 GPA last semester, she is committed to academics but finds time to be involved and give back to the campus and local communities.
As Miss Finger Lakes, Rose is required to have a platform dedicated to a social issue. Her platform is fighting back against domestic violence and sexual assault. A native of Rochester, NY, Rose transferred from Monroe Community College to Syracuse University in 2008. “SU is a wonderful place for social work. The professors I’ve had are just as excited as the students are, and they love what they teach.”
In addition to her responsibilities as a full-time student in the College of Human Ecology and her community service and public appearances as Miss Finger Lakes, Rose averages between 20-25 hours a week as an employee with SU Food Services. Her resume of volunteer service includes organizations such as Vera House, which provides emergency sheltering services for women in crisis, and the Onondaga County Family Court where she helps victims file orders of protection for themselves and their families.
