The David B. Falk Center for Sport Management

Training leaders for excellence in the sport industry

In April 2008, Syracuse University received a $5 million gift from renowned sports agent David B. Falk ’72 and his wife, Rhonda S. Falk ’74, establishing the David B. Falk Center for Sport Management, an interdisciplinary research center that is the focal point of the Department of Sport Management. The Falk Center is focused on preparing the next generation of sport management leaders with an academically rigorous curriculum. Due to the highly competitive nature of the sports industry, the Center integrates numerous real-world, experiential learning opportunities and faculty-student research projects into its broad-based teaching curriculum to enhance undergraduates’ experience and employment opportunities. Most notably, it stands apart in its deep focus on innovative life-skills training to help student-athletes better manage the realities of professional sports, a core value held by the Falks that reflects their lifelong commitment to excellence and integrity in the sports industry. The inaugural event for the Falk Center was held in April 2008 at Madison Square Garden, which included participation by students in the Department of Sport Management.

The event featured a panel discussion titled “Sports in America: Is Winning the Only Thing?” and attracted a standing room-only audience. Panelists included Rick Burton ’79, G’80, (who at the time was the chief marketing officer of the U.S. Olympic Committee and has since been appointed the David B. Falk Distinguished Professor of Sport Management); Kay Koplovitz, chair and CEO of Koplovitz & Co. and founder of the Madison Square Garden Sports Network; George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN and ABC Sports and co-chair of Disney Media Networks; David Falk, founder and CEO of FAME; and Mike Tirico ’88, sportscaster for ESPN and ABC Sports.
